Judges

The Cable & Satellite International Awards are judged on technical merit and market contribution by an independent, experienced and highly respected pool of international industry figures.

Dr William CooperDr William Cooper
William is founder and chief executive of independent interactive media consultancy informitv, where he advises clients on convergence and digital media strategy and implementation. Previously, as head of interactive at BBC Broadcast, he operationally managed the launch and delivery of its online and interactive TV services. William began his career as a broadcast journalist and is a regular contributor to international conferences, with papers published at both IBC and NAB.


Dirk Jaeger
Dirk acted as technical director at EuroCableLabs from Oct 2001 to Dec 2007. He is co-ordinating the EU-funded project ReDeSign and is active as chairman of technical committees of standardisation various bodies and associations. Has been appointed into various advisory committees. He is a member of FKTG (Germany) and SCTE (UK) and has published a number of papers on aspects of cable, digital television and communications technologies in various journals.


Frank DicksonFrank Dickson
Frank is a VP of research with In-Stat, where he leads the company’s Mobile Internet research practice at. Prior to that, he was co-founder and chief research officer at MultiMedia Intelligence. He has in-depth expertise in focus areas including internet TV, IPTV, VoD, home networking, mobile video and content platforms.


Dr George T Waters
Dr Waters joined RTE, the Irish public broadcaster, in 1956 as a member of the team that prepared the launch of television in 1961. He was also director of the technical department at EBU, a co-founder of the International Academy of Broadcasting and is its president since 1993. He also chaired the DVB World conferences for eight years. Dr Waters is a life fellow of the SMPTE and a fellow of the IET.


Jeff HeynenJeff Heynen
Jeff currently serves as directing analyst, broadband and IPTV, at Infonetics Research. He joined Infonetics in 2005, after four years as senior product marketing manager with VoIP switch equipment startup SentitO Networks, and two years as marketing communications manager with telecoms infrastructure manufacturer Tellabs.


John MoroneyJohn Moroney
John is a founding director of Octegra, which provides independent market research and strategic advice for companies in the telecoms, IT and media sectors. John has 25 years of industry knowledge. Prior to setting up Octegra, John was a principal consultant at Ovum, an associate director at Gartner and a senior executive with BT.


Ken McCannKen McCann
Ken McCann is a director and co-founder of ZetaCast, an independent technology consultancy company specialising in digital TV and multimedia. Ken contributed significantly to the development of the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 standards and has chaired the DVB technical group responsible for audio visual coding specifications (TM-AVC) since its inception some 14 years ago. Prior to founding ZetaCast, Ken was technology director at NTL Broadcast.


Ken McCannMark Kirstein
Mark is co-founder and president at analyst firm MultiMedia Intelligence. He has 20 years of industry experience.
Prior to founding MultiMedia Intelligence, Mark founded the market research company, Minova Technology, which subsequently became the foundation of iSuppli's multimedia research coverage, lead by Mark. Previously, Mark was VP and general manager of In-Stat.


Ken McCannMark Meza and Shane Walker
Mark and Shane are analysts with IMS Research's Consumer Electronics group. Mark manages and co-ordinates the quarterly updates of IMS Research's Online Television Database and Market Intelligence Service. In addition, Mark covers the worldwide payTV industry and markets for digital TV. He also has a specific focus on satellite, cable, IPTV, DTT set-top boxes, and compression technologies.
Shane’s area of expertise includes IP delivery of payTV services, including telco TV and internet TV. In addition, Shane covers worldwide developments of HDTV equipment and services.


Ken McCannNeil Dormand
Neil spent over a decade working in BBCTV studios in engineering roles, as well as general manager of technology and production services. Following retirement from the BBC in 2000, Neil became technology consultant to the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association. He has also held a number of directorships in broadcast related companies and is an associate of the Bakewell House Consultancy. Neil is a member of the IBC Conference Committee and Chairman of the Thames Valley Centre of the Royal Television Society.

Phil ReedPhil Reed
Phil Reed is a freelance engineer and journalist with over 38 years of experience in the broadcast industry. He started as an engineer, working for the BBC and moved into systems with Ampex and Sony. He has worked for both facility and production companies and has a thorough knowledge of today's equipment and operational practices.


Dr Roger BlakewayDr Roger Blakeway
Dr Blakeway is president of the SCTE (Society of Telecommunication Engineers), a post which he has held for the last 12 years. The SCTE serves the technicians and engineers involved in the cable telecommunications and allied fields. Dr Blakeway has been involved in the cable communications industry for over 20 years, holding engineering director positions in Westminster Cable TV, Videotron, Cable & Wireless and DIVA.


Sebastian MoeritzSebastian Moeritz
Sebastian is an internationally recognised figure in the field of digital video coding and its various applications. Since 1996, he has been involved in a number of IT-related ventures and joined dicas, a developer of ISO MPEG-4 real-time video coding solutions, based in Germany, as its CEO in the beginning of 2001.
Since 2004, Sebastian has been president of the MPEG Industry Forum (MPEGIF).


Anver AndersonAnver Anderson
With over 25 years experience in the communications industry, Anver manages Anver Ltd, a full service solutions agency for the satellite and broadcast industry. Anver has worked for global satellite operators and service providers and has experience in business development and product marketing centred on sport and news gathering.


Dr Helmut SteinDr Helmut Stein
Helmut's professional career started in 1973 at Robert Bosch in Stuttgart. Later he has been a board member for R&D in Blaupunkt and Nokia. In 2001, he joined German payTV operator Premiere as COO to help restructure the company.
He has been in the board of European research projects like Eureka 95 (HDTV), PALplus (16:9) and a founding member of DVB in 1991/1993. Since then he has been a member of the DVB Steering Board and Chairman of the Promotion and Communication Module (PCM) since its creation. Today he runs his own company, ISDM (International Strategies for Digital Media). Helmut studied Physics and Radio-Astronomy at the University of Bonn, Germany.


Philip HunterPhilip Hunter
Philip is a technology journalist covering TV broadcasting and content technologies. Coming from an IT background as a former programmer and software test analyst he is well placed to understand the current migration of content to a digital platform served on demand. Philip writes for CSI on a variety of topics.
